Cabo Pulmo history
The history of Cabo Pulmo dates back about 25,000 years when this unique coral reef began to form along the Tropic of Cancer. At that time, of course, there were no names or borders, so let’s fast forward thousands of years to the period between 1910 and 1912. During this time, the Sea of Cortez played a crucial role in the jewelry industry due to its abundant pearl beds, with Cabo Pulmo being one of the most important locations. The area was heavily exploited for several decades, eventually depleting nearly all its pearls.
Between the 1940s and 1950s, Cabo Pulmo transformed from a pearl diving community to a commercial fishing village. In the following decades, history repeated itself, but this time with overfishing. Excessive fishing of fish, turtles, and sharks, both for sport and commercial purposes, began to seriously damage this fragile ecosystem.
With its growing reputation for sport fishing and beautiful beaches, Cabo Pulmo became a favorite spot for windsurfers during the 1970s. Windsurfers would travel to Baja California Sur in caravans, spending the winter season enjoying nature and taking advantage of the perfect northern winds that made the coast ideal for windsurfing.
In the mid-1980s, the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) and its Marine Biology Department conducted the first scientific study of the area. This study revealed the declining condition of the reefs and laid the groundwork for developing a conservation plan. After 10 years of research and political and bureaucratic struggles, the area we now know as Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park began to take shape.
The park’s journey as a protected natural area had just begun. Overnight, the residents of Cabo Pulmo traded their fishing nets and hooks for scuba diving gear. This was a quick and abrupt transition for the town’s 320 inhabitants, who had once made their living from fishing but were now turning to tourism services.
The collaborative efforts of Cabo Pulmo’s residents began to show remarkable results between 2010 and 2012. A final study revealed astonishing data on the ecosystem’s recovery: the park’s biomass had increased by 500% compared to adjacent areas that were not under protection. This achievement filled the community with pride and attracted global attention to Cabo Pulmo as one of the national parks with the highest recovery rates in the world. The work of conservation continues to be passed down to future generations, as the people of Cabo Pulmo understand that protecting their environment is the path forward.

To be more precise, it is located at the coordinates 23.3966° N, 109.4292° W. I mention this because one of Cabo Pulmo’s successes lies in it’s location. How to arrive to Cabo Pulmo?
The most common way to get to Cabo Pulmo from abroad is to fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), located in San José del Cabo. This airport receives direct flights from several major cities in the United States, Canada, and now it has a new direct flight from Frankfurt that connects to the European Union by Condor Airlines.
If you can’t find a direct flight to Los Cabos, you can fly to Mexico City (MEX) or Tijuana (TIJ) and then take a domestic flight to Los Cabos. Mexican airlines frequently offer flights between these cities and Los Cabos.
Once you arrive at Los Cabos International Airport, you have several options to reach Cabo Pulmo.
Major car rental companies have offices at the airport. Driving from the airport to Cabo Pulmo is an excellent option if you want the flexibility to explore the region at your own pace. The drive takes about two hours. There are private and shared shuttle services you can book in advance. These services will take you directly to your accommodation in Cabo Pulmo. You can also take a taxi from the airport, although this option can be more expensive compared to car rentals or shuttle services.

From San José del Cabo
Distance: Approximately 100 km (62 miles).
Route: Take the Transpeninsular Highway (Federal Highway 1) north, then Federal Highway 1D east to La Ribera. From there, follow the signs to Cabo Pulmo.
Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours by car.
From La Paz
Distance: Approximately 160 km (99 miles).
Route: Take Federal Highway 1 south to San Antonio, then head east on Federal Highway 1D to La Ribera. From there, follow the signs to Cabo Pulmo.
Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes by car.
From Todos Santos
Distance: Approximately 160 km (99 miles).
Route: Take Federal Highway 19 south to San Pedro, then Federal Highway 1 north to La Ribera. From there, follow the signs to Cabo Pulmo.
Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours by car.
The roads to La Ribera are paved and in good condition, and the road to Cabo Pulmo are in good condition, but the last 10 km is a dirt road and some areas can be narrow and winding. Drive cautiously and ensure you have an updated map or GPS. Make sure to fill up your tank before heading out. There are several gas stations along the way but the price may be different and there is no gas station in Cabo Pulmo.

Carry Cash
Cabo Pulmo is a remote location, and some businesses do not accept credit cards. Even those that do may experience issues with card terminals due to network instability. Be sure to bring enough cash, preferably in Mexican pesos, to cover meals, activities, and tips. U.S. dollars and euros are also widely accepted.
Pack The Essentials
This destination has limited infrastructure. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. If you have snorkeling or SCUBA gear, bring it along, although local operators also offer rentals.
Rent the Right Vehicle
The last 10 kilometers of the road to Cabo Pulmo is a dirt road, and during the rainy season (September–November), large puddles of water and mud can form, potentially blocking access if you don’t have the right vehicle. While these puddles are usually shallow, they can be wide or cover the entire road. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to navigate these conditions and explore nearby spots like secluded beaches or hidden waterfalls.
If a four-wheel-drive vehicle isn’t an option, you may still manage with a standard rental car by driving slowly along the edges of the road, avoiding the center of puddles.
Book In Advance
If you plan to dive or snorkel in the Cabo Pulmo National Park, make reservations ahead of time. Activities are regulated to protect the ecosystem, so availability can be limited. It is recommended to make reservations in advance for the high season that runs from September to December since Cabo Pulmo has a limited number of rooms and it is almost impossible to make a reservation close to these dates.

We also recommend making reservations if you are going in a group.
